What I’ve Been Reading Lately

My little cherubs circa 2005ish

“You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.” — Paul Sweeney

I love getting lost in a good book. The stories that make you laugh out loud or cry quiet tears. The books that make your heart beat faster and leave you unable to turn the pages fast enough.

I’ve devoured 10 books over the past four months. (Thanks to Goodreads, I can keep track of and rate the books I’ve read. Great app — highly recommend!)

Typically, I’m reading one book and listening to another. And yes, I’m firmly in the camp that says listening counts as reading. I listen while I walk the dogs, do laundry, clean the house, and anytime I’m in the car. I love a good audiobook, and the best one I’ve listened to recently is:

The Calamity Club by Katherine Stockett
It is a performance! So, so good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is by the author of The Help — another wonderful book and movie.

Additional good listens lately:

  • The Lies They Told by Ellen Marie Wiseman

  • The Book Club of Troublesome Women by Marie Bostwick

  • Mad Mable by Sally Hepworth

  • The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett

It takes me a little longer to actually read a book. (By the time I’m ready to read, I’m in bed and can’t keep my eyes open!) But I’ve read a few page-turners lately that kept me wanting to read “just one more page.”

  • Go Gentle by Maria Semple

  • This Tender Land by Kent Krueger — loved, loved, loved this book!

  • Night Road by Kristin Hannah — one of her older ones that I hadn’t read. She never disappoints.

To round out the list of recent reads:

  • The Shampoo Effect by Jenny Jackson — ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I think I’m too old for this one. It just didn’t grab me.

  • Dolly All the Time by Annabel Monaghan — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

And a few of my all-time favorites:

  • The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

  • The Magnolia Parks Universe Series by Jessa Hastings

  • Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

  • Theo of Golden by Allen Levi

  • Be Ready When the Luck Happens by Ina Garten — listen to this one!

  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee — had to throw a classic into the mix!

Oh my goodness! It’s hard to stop. There are so many good stories by fabulous writers. (Jodi Picoult and Kristin Hannah are two of my favorites.)

Do you have a favorite book or a recent good read? Please share! I love a good memoir, historical fiction, romance, thriller… I’m always looking for my next book!
